Get On Google Maps
Getting on Google Maps is huge for your new business. Especially if you provide a service or have a retail store. When people search for a local service or product google maps is where most of them look. Some studies show that 30% of people who look for a product or service on Google Maps end up buying it. Getting on Google maps and showing up at the top takes a little work but it's well worth it. Here is what you need to do;
- Search for your business on Google Maps.
- Add it or claim it.
- Update it and make sure all information is correct and complete.
- Next you want to make sure that same info shows up in all the major local directories. Go to Moz Local and search for your business. They will tell you where you need to add or update your business from there.
Now at least you are listed every where you can be and your information is accurate. Make sure you use the same info you put on Google Maps on all of the other directories. Google verifies it's info by checking these other sites. So make sure it matches. The next thing they look for are reviews about your business, so on to step 2...
Review are crazy important for any business these days. They help you show up higher in the search results and customers are using them more and more when making a buying decision. If you check Yelp before you eat somewhere then you know what I am talking about. Right now Yelp is the most important place for you to get reviews on. Not only do they own the top natural results on Google, for pretty much every service, but people also check reviews on Yelp more often than anywhere else. The most important thing you can do is make asking for reviews part of your normal processes. If someone isn't happy they will post a negative review but happy people are less likely to post a positive review. So make sure you ask the happy ones to do it.
Market On Google
According to Search Engine Journal over 80% of people choose Google to search for products or services, or for answers to their kids random questions. So it's critical that you make plans to market your new business on Google. Here are the main ways you can do that;
- Google Maps (but we covered that)
- Google Adwords
- Google Shopping
- Natural Results

Google Shopping is a place to list your products if you sell online. You submit a feed of all of your products and then bid to show up above people sharing similar products. If you have a product go to Google Shopping to see how your competitors are showing up and to sign up.
Showing up in the Natural Results on Google is a whole other can of worms. Essentially though you are trying to show up on page one when someone searches for keyword phrases related to your product or service.
