Creating content sucks… so don’t do it!

By now we all know that Google is a content feeding hungry hippo. The more relevant and interesting content you create on your website the better. But creating a content calendar and coming up with viral worthy blog post goodness is super hard and can be frustrating.

SO DON’T DO IT! Ok, that’s not true, you still have to do it. But this post will give you an awesome tactic to lighten the load while growing your likes and followers. What is this epic tactic? It’s simple and well known, but something I bet you aren’t taking advantage of. It’s…. drum roll please… (click read more, it’s not going to just pop up on it’s own. lol)

First off, what is user generated content?

Wikipedia says;
User-generated content (UGC) is defined as “any form of content such as blogs, wikis, discussion forums, posts, chats, tweets, podcasting, pins, digital images, video, audio files, and other forms of media that was created by users of an online system or service, often made available via social media websites
Basically, it means – and this is key to this whole post – have the people who visit your site, use your service or buy your product create content for you. This can take many forms. Here are some ideas.
  1. Testimonials (written or video)
  2. Pictures Using Your Product.
  3. Product Reviews
  4. Blog posts.
  5. Instagram and Pinterested Pictures With You Tagged
  6. Facebook Posts With You Tagged

How do I get people to do this for me?

Be creative, but here is one idea I shared with a friend this morning about a content to do exactly this. It’s really what prompted me to write this post.
Hey John Doe (name changes to protect the innocent), I saw a kicker sticker this morning and had a random idea. They have probably used this but… for a social media campaign to get some video content and grow your social media audience. A “how do you get your kicks” campaign. Users would need to post a short video of how they get their kicks with kicker equipment, post it on youtube or their facebook, tag you guys and either subscribe to your youtube channel or like your facebook page. Once they did this they would be entered to win something. To pick a winner you can either have other users vote by liking it, or pick whichever one you think is best.

Make it a part of your marketing plans and have fun.

User content has to be a decent part of your strategy. Lots of good and ok content about a brand, posted on the customers social media accounts or blogs, and on your site is strong. Good wide spread user content will probably get your more rank boost and exposure than something you write. It will have a short shelf life though so it has to be a recurring thing, like quarterly. It will also grow your audience because they will have to like, follow or join your newsletter to be eligable. Where as your content will generate less traffic but it will trickle in forever potentially.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

Start figuring out ways to get your customer base, or potential customers to generate content and create a buzz for you.  You’ll be amazed at the benefits it creates and how much it will help spread the word about your product or service.
