Every business, new or old, needs to be on top of their internet marketing game if they want to compete in today’s market. More now than ever people are looking online to find, research and pick who they will buy from. So it’s critical that you show up well when they search for a product or service and that your website is ready to convert them from someone searching to someone buying.
Here are 5 Reasons You Need Internet Marketing
- A website is like a business card, it’s expected.
- People are looking online when they need something, not when someone wants to mix an ad into their daily life.
- People are surgically attached to their phones.
- Tracking your return is a lot easier and more effective.
- The return on your marketing spend is higher.
A website is like a business card, it’s expected.
If someone hears about you and goes online they expect to find a website. If they don’t they will likely think you are less professional and established. Much like a business card a website is one of the basic items you need for your business. At a minimum it should talk about what you do and how to get ahold of you. However it’s also a great tool to help you qualify your customers so that you get the types of leads or sales you want.
It’s also extremely important that your website is mobile friendly and responsive. Meaning it works well on a smartphone or tablet. Recent stats I’ve seen show that over 70% of people now have smartphones ( source: Moz.com). Also, Google is moving more and more towards favoring websites that are responsive.
People are looking when they need something.
People are looking online when they need something, not when someone wants to mix an ad into their daily life. When was the last time you used the yellow pages to find a local service or a product? When was the last time you used your phone for this? How about calling a company because you saw their ad in the newspaper? When someone searches for something on Google they are often looking for it soon. They either need the service or want to buy something. So people that come to your site from a search are more likely to buy, because that’s where their mindset is at. When you spend money on a billboard or newspaper ad you are really just hoping someone who is driving down that road or reading that newspaper article happens to need what you are offering. So unless your goal is just branding, to get your name out there, search marketing is a much more effective and more affordable way to go.
People are surgically attached to their phones.
I don’t know about you but if I leave my phone at home I start to freak out a little. It’s crazy how addicted we have become to our phones. As a marketer or someone trying to generate more business this is awesome though. It means we constantly have people we can reach and market to. Whether we send them an email, have an ad on Google or show up inside of a game they are playing a game we can reach out to targeted customers like never before.
Tracking is a lot easier and more effective.
Offline marketing is so hard to track. You need a separate phone number, a special URL and you need to rely on whoever talks to the customer first remembers to ask how they heard about you. With online marketing, or internet marketing, it’s way easier. Tools like Google Analytics will keep track of when someone came to your site, where they came from, how long they spent and what they did while they were there. Couple that with data from your accounting program and you can really see what your return was and what your cost per customer can or should be.
The return on your marketing spend is higher.
We’ve tracked a lot of different marketing efforts for our clients. With one client we found out they were barely breaking even on the $35,000 a year they were spending on the phone book. This same client has seen as much as a 1500% return from their internet marketing. For every client we have tracked we have ALWAYS seen a much better return with internet marketing over offline marketing.
